The LDS Daily WOOL© Archive - Eph. 4:11-14

"Then the apostle Paul told us that the Lord had placed in His church apostles and prophets, pastors and teachers, and evangelists for the work of the ministry (that is the great missionary program), for the edifying of the body of Christ (that's the teaching in our auxiliaries and home teaching and priesthood teaching and so forth), for the perfecting of the saints (that comes through the service that they render), 'till we all come in the unity of the faith.' (See Eph. 4:11-13.)" - LeGrand Richards, "The Things of God and Man," Ensign, November 1977, p. 23

"For some months, I've tried to emphasize repentance, one of the most vital and merciful doctrines of the kingdom. It is too little understood, too little applied by us all, as if it were merely a word on a bumper sticker. Since we have been told clearly by Jesus what manner of men and women we ought to become--even as He is (see 3 Ne. 27:27)--how can we do so, except each of us employs repentance as the regular means of personal progression? Personal repentance is part of taking up the cross daily. (See Luke 9:23.) Without it, clearly there could be no 'perfecting of the Saints.' (Eph. 4:12.)" - Neal A. Maxwell, "Repentance," Ensign, November 1991, p. 30

"We are bound to note events and trends in the world which will constitute special challenges. We cannot expect to live in times of turbulence without experiencing some of that turbulence ourselves. But we do not need to be 'tossed to and fro, and carried about [by] every wind of doctrine' without anchor (see Eph. 4:14). We have fellowship in a divine church. We have present-day prophets to guide us. We have Christ as our shepherd to lead us." - Spencer W. Kimball, "Do Not Weary by the Way," Ensign, November 1980, p. 76

"With the enemy combined, it is so vital to keep 'in the right way.' (Moro. 6:4.) Orthodoxy in thought and behavior brings safety and felicity as the storms come, including 'every wind of doctrine.' (See Eph. 4:14.) Happily, amid such winds the Holy Ghost not only helps us to recognize plain truth but also plain nonsense!" - Neal A. Maxwell, "Behold, the Enemy Is Combined," Ensign, May 1993, 78

"So if you really desire to avoid deceptions, if you really desire to do that which is right and proper, then you take advantage of the safeguard that the Lord has given you in the organization of this Church. And you remember that if you will follow the teachings of your inspired prophets, seers, and revelators, of your apostles, of your pastors and teachers, your bishops and your stake presidents, you won't need to wonder whether or not such and such a doctrine is a deception, whether it is false or whether it is true, because those authorized servants of the Lord will lead you into paths of righteousness, and they will keep you on the right track." - Mark E. Petersen, "Conference Report," October 1945, Afternoon Meeting, p. 92

Young people are not living in a vacuum and, like all of us, are subjected to what the Apostle Paul called “every wind of doctrine.” Let me read from Paul’s epistle to the Ephesians, where he explained why the Lord has given us apostles, prophets, and other inspired leaders and teachers: “That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and [be no more] carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive” (Eph. 4:11–14). – Richard E. Turley, Sr., “Bridging the Gap between Uncertainty and Certainty,” Ensign (CR) May 1998
