The LDS Daily WOOL© Archive - John 7:17

"It was the Master who replied in answer to the question as to how one might know of him and his doctrine: 'If any man will do his will, he shall know.' (John 7:17.) Would you think an authority on science to be one who had never experimented in a laboratory? Would you give much heed to the comments of a music critic who did not know music or an art critic who didn't paint? Just so, one like yourself who would 'know God' must be one who does his will and keeps his commandments and practices the virtues Jesus lived?" - Harold B. Lee, "Decisions for Successful Living," [Salt Lake City: Deseret Book Co., 1973], p. 39-40

"Experience by experience, faith can yield to knowledge 'in that thing,' meaning the particularized verifications of gospel truths. (Alma 32:34.) It was so with the brother of Jared: 'He had faith no longer, for he knew.' (Ether 3:19.) Brigham Young assured that 'every principle God has revealed carries its own convictions of its truth to the human mind.' (In Journal of Discourses, 9:149.) Jesus clearly declared that 'if any man will do his will, he shall know.' (John 7:17.) However, Jesus described the steady process as being one of 'line upon line, precept upon precept.' (D&C 98:12.)" - Neal A. Maxwell, "Lest Ye Be Wearied and Faint in Your Minds," Ensign, May 1991, p. 89

"Passive acceptance of the Lord is not enough. Vibrant testimony comes of anxious seeking. Strength comes of active service in the Master's cause. 'Learn of me,' was Jesus' injunction. He further declared that he that doeth the will of the Father 'shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.' (John 7:17.)" - Gordon B. Hinckley, "With All Thy Getting Get Understanding,' Ensign, August 1988, p. 5

"True disciples are those who go beyond simply believing. They act out their belief. Said the Savior, 'If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself' (John 7:17). Disciples follow the Divine Master. Their actions speak in symphonic harmony with their beliefs. They know who they are. They know what God expects of them. They mirror inner peace and certainty concerning the mission and resurrection of Christ. They hunger and thirst after righteousness. They know they are here on this earth for a purpose. They understand life after death. They believe that the transcendent event in the ministry of the Christ was the Atonement, culminating in the Resurrection." - James E. Faust, "In the Strength of the Lord: The Life and Teachings of James E. Faust," [Salt Lake City: Deseret Book Co., 1999], p. 290-291

"What is it to know of the doctrine? It is an unwavering assurance. The Lord has offered a rich reward but has provided that it can be had only by meeting certain requirements. In this case the blessing promised is a knowledge of the divinity of the doctrine. And in this case the law or requirement is that one must 'do his will.' Most of us know what his will is, far more than we have disposition or ability to comply. One must not only be baptized and receive the Holy Ghost, but also live the commandments to be given the knowledge of the divinity of the work. Mere passive acceptance of the doctrines will not give the testimony; no casual half-compliance with the program will bring that assurance; it will come only through an all-out effort to live his commandments." - Spencer W. Kimball, "President Kimball Speaks Out," [Salt Lake City: Deseret Book Co., 1981], p. 21

Jesus explained, “If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.” (John 7:17.) In other words, as you try it you can know it is true. This requires the faith to try, but it yields spiritual evidence. To the disciple who tries the experiment will come conviction, knowledge, and light. As the disciple continues, he receives “more light; and that light groweth brighter and brighter until the perfect day.” (D&C 50:24.) – John K. Carmack, “The Soils and Roots of Testimony,” Ensign (CR) November 1988
